Alan Ladd (famous name you got there), You didn't mention where the new string(s) broke. However, some Wurlitzer's have a pretty radical angle of incidence as the string passes the upper stagger pin and reverses toward to the tuning pin. The hexagonal core of universals has been known to not like to render through this angle. In addition, there is an *additional* crimping effect on the string due to the angle the stagger pin is drilled. Even normal strings will cry uh-uh sometimes. Take heart. Had it (they) not broken, they wouldn't have sounded good anyway! You asked for suggestions. Order the correct custom string(s) from Mapes, or the string winder of your choice. Jim Harvey, RPT _______________________ Reply Separator ___________________________ I attempted to replace it with a universal bass string. I measured the string with my Micrometer and with a string gauge. I then proceeded to replace the string. I pulled the string up to tension and as I when I did a test blow to make use I got the pin set, The new string broke. I tried again, remeasured to be sure I didn't make a mistake and then I used a 1/2 size larger string ( because I was out of the other size.) The second string broke also. I have never had this type of problem installing a universal bass string before. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
