To Steve, thanks for the lead to the Journal article. I guess it does answer some of the issues I raised, yet it leaves unaddressed when is it too much weight? Do we ever find it appropriate to remove leads? For example I am servicing a Schimmel in my area. The customer felt his repetition was poor. I could not find any problem with the action per se. I could get all the reptition needed using two index fingers and could not imagine him needing any more than that. I did notice that they have the Renner underlever with triple weights for all the bass and double weights for most of the rest. They also have very large, heavy damper heads. I did not weigh them as Del Fandrich mentions in his article, a 10-15 gram average. I think I will for future reference. The weight of that combination just seemed excessive. I wonder if the damper system weight is being regulated in any way by other technicians or are we just accepting lots of weight here. Has anybody else ever decreased the weight in an underlever system? All the talk seems to address ways to add weight. I was hoping that there might be some guidelines to reducing unnecessary weight since the pianist must lift this weight in his playing. Nobody has ever encountered this?
