Noting the recent discussion on hide glue, I wanted to mention two magazine articles on the subject that are both interesting and authoritative. First, in the December, 1965 PT Journal is "The Use of Hide Glues in Furniture Manufacture", by Robert Gill, Technical Department, Peter Cooper Corporations, Gowanda, NY. (The Peter Cooper Corporations operated the world's largest hide glue factory.) This article is included in the "General Repair" Journal Reprint book available from the PTG Home Office. Mr. Gill writes of the various grades of hide glue, why it sticks to wood, how to prepare it and the wood surface, and more. Secondly, Fine Woodworking issue #57, March/April 1986, has an excellent article by Jim Cummins, one of their Associate Editors, entitled "Visit to a Glue Factory". The color photos from inside the factory are quite intriguing. Besides the details on how the glue is made, this article also has good advice on usage. Both articles are worth studying (or reprinting, if you are reading, Steve Brady!) Fern Henry
