Brent and List:

I agree with Brent's comment about the excellence of Varnish for
soundboard protection.  When I was at Baldwin, we always used Varnish
on the Grands, but used Lacquer on the verticals mostly for speed and
efficiency.  In the Grand factory we always did the boards last thing
in the afternoon so that there wouldn't be dust specks settling on the
Varnish.

When I was on a company trip to Germany in '73 I toured a local rebuild
shop in Hamburg.  They used polyester resin coating for Grand boards.
