My project, Send a Piana to Havana, is loved and hated by the U.S. government. Commerce has licensed me to send 123 pianos and tons of related supplies. The Department of Missile and Nuclear Technology has also signed off on the pianos. But several weeks ago Treasury hit me with a threat of a $1.3 million fine and 10 years in prison if I return to Cuba. So I went on Halloween dressed as a 1935 Lester upright (lots of pictures in the press around here) and while I was in Cuba Treasury backed off, issuing me a license to do all this Red tuning. Go figure. The other reason for my last trip was to deliver another container of pianos, eleven uprights, and a load of parts. This February a tuners' brigade is going to Cuba to get them ready for distribution to kids and teachers. If anyone on this list would like to participate in this legal trip, that would be great. Time: 10 days, first part of February Cost: $1300 or less per person Activities: work on the pianos, teach skills to Cuban tuners and students, engage in various trips and cultural activities at the beach and elsewhere.
