Removal of backchecks is easy, I have a pair of plier type hammer extractors
that pull them out quickly. I use small vise grips to prevent wasting time
pulling the check off the wire.

I also use a drill press to press the new ones on but I do use a vise to hold a
wider than key bllock of wood at the proper angle for the wire to go straight
into the key.

If the wire fits loosely, you can use some pvc glue to hold them in place.

On Stgeinways, the height changes gradually from on end to the other. Check
how it is with your set and replicate that.
