The fishing line is synthetic and they get brittle with age.
I believe a good source for cord would be Renner.

In Stanwood & Co. wip spring conversions we use pure linen cord which used
to be used for dial cords.  We have a limited supply but it's no longer made
so I'm hoarding what I've got.

Bob, you might consider replacing the flange.  It might be less work,
especially if it's the type of butt with a plate and screw.
