         The grease pencil won't damage the plain wire strings,  but if you
start using solvent to remove some type of wax or grease on the bass strings,
you are looking for trouble.(in the way of dead strings 4 months later)

      far better to tie a small,colored piece of thread at the nodes,  it
cannot damage the bass strings.

       Will you also see to it that the artist washes their hands before
putting them all over the strings of a piano??
