Pinblocks need to be bored at whatever angle is derived so that the string is at 90 degrees to the tuning pin when the bottom coil is 1/8" from the plate and rests on the first bearing bar. A simple guage can be made from some junk metal, or old tuning pin with the top cut off and a straight piece of wire soldered or glued into the hole which is 1/8" from hole to top. Invert the pia and measure the angle of the pin to block or plate when the wire rests on the bearing bar in the treble. This angle prevents the wire from climbing down the pin if the angle is too great and from trying to crawl up the coil above if the angle is too low. Tuning pins should then be driven down so the bottom coil, when tight and leveled is 1/8" from the plate. Never higher, rarely lower. Newton nhunt@rci.rutgers.edu
