I may be showing my ignorance, but couldn't you just (no pun intended) tune
the circle of fourths and fifths (and octaves, of course) perfect?  In my
early attempts to tune by ear (and without knowledge) I was able to get
the white keys to sound great, but I hadn't learned to stretch the fourths,
so the black keys were off.  Voila, equal temperament!  Am I all wet?  If
I'm not wet, I'd better wet myself down or I'll soon be on fire! ;~}
