Softening Hardened Damper Felts

An old technician friend of mine suggested "skinning" the dampers with a
sandpaper stick, which does restore the soft surface.  The idea is not to
remove felt from the damper so as to reduce its effectiveness, but just to
fluff it up a bit.

It has worked in this very situation for me.
