It seems to me, that 88 notes is a logical stopping point for a number of reasons. 1. you have about reached the limit of an average armspan. 2. notes above C have reached the point of diminishing returns, both harmonically,( C 88 on a Steinway D is almost 40 cents above the theoretical multiple of lower C's. Below the Ao @ 27.5 hz, the ear begins to use overtones to synthesize a perceived pitch), and in measures of tone quality,i.e., the first overtone of C88 is over 8,200, a frequency range we associate more with timbre than pitch. Where do you stop? If bosendorfer could add a couple of octaves at the bottom, the lowest notes could be below 0 Hz, and actually become like an acoustic vaccuum cleaner, play the bottom key and you start to make higher notes disappear!!
