List, What magic techniques do you use to tune the 4th strings in the treble of a Blūthner grand? This is an extra string in the treble that is not struck by the hammer, but should be tuned along with each unison. Earlier Blūthners had, I believe, an agraffe-like addition screwed into the bridge at each unison which held this 4th string above the others. Modern Blūthners have a special agraffe in the usual place, but with four holes in it; the fourth hole is slightly higher than the others, which holds that string higher than the others so that it is not struck by the hammer. I was asked this question recently and do not have a Blūthner here for observation and experimentation. So I thought there must be some expertise readily available for tapping out there. Any information or corrections to my descriptions above would be welcome. --Joel
