Hi Ted,

Yes, I have run into the same problem with Kawai pianos.  The
trick is to loosen the screws that hold the large flange to the
belly?.  Once these are free you will be able to swing the
whole mechanism towards you so you can get at the screws holding
the "large flanges" to the lifter tray.
