Horace, et.al., I concur with Frank Weston. I don't think Owen said that the 19th c. tuner *couldn't* or *didn't* hear beats. He states in his book that they *did*, albeit they only used 4ths and 5ths. The thirds and sixths were judged by their tonal color alone. Vince Mrykalo
