[Performer] Trio Grande (From Pittsburgh, PA.) John D'Amico - pianist Virgil Walters - upright bass Rodger Ryan - drummer [Concert Date] May 5, 1997 2:30 pm [Location] Webster Hall on the campus of MSSC, Joplin, Missouri [Piano] Steinway D [Serial #] Serial #524091 [Tuning Used] Equal Temperament [Program] The Trio Grande played a mixture of classical jazz standards, ballads and fusion. The repertoire was a combination of original songs and custom arrangements of tunes by jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Dizzie Gillespie and others. [Body] This performance was jazz at its best. There were a lot of upbeat, high energy songs interspersed with songs that were slower and more thoughtful. The drummer really cut loose on a few of the songs, and at times his arms were just a blur of motion. The bass player was amazing, doing trills and moving his fingers faster than I thought humanly possible! Of course, underscoring the group was the pianist with his incredible playing ability. On one song, the Trio Grande started from playing in 2/4, switched to 4/4, then they came back in 3/4, and finished up in 5/4. Excellent concert! During the intermission I spoke with the pianist, John D'Amico and he mentioned that he has two of the best piano technicians in Pittsburg keeping his personal piano in good shape. He mentioned that they are part of the PTG. Several nice comments were made during the concert about the great piano! David A.
