Usable Lifespan (was Re: Confession time)

Avery:

Our older NY "D" is now 14 years old and it is going out for
restringing, new hammers, shanks, reps. etc. this week.  The hammers are
not that old, replaced about 7 years ago, but they are from Steinway's
"Bunny" series (really soft and with really short tails.)  They got
doped to death to make them work.  Now they don't work very well.  I
really think 12 - 15 years is about it on an instrument that has had
that kind of use, yet still has this kind of expectation.
