The recent discussions remind me of a story by Isaac Asimov which took place in
a future time when generations of calculator use had completely erased all
memory of manual arithmetic.  Then a child appeared who was touted as the
greatest genius in all the realm for discovering how to do what all the experts
believed was impossible:  long division.
