Warren,

Yes. I like silver solder for this, also. Use flux. I like to do most of the
heating on the rod and not the wire, so I don't get a "cold" joint. If the
solder slurps into the joint or looks concave, it's okay. If it beads up,
it's probably not completely attached to the rod.

While you're at it, make sure there aren't hammer marks on the wire, which
would chew the bushing in the monkey.
