Hi all, Once I was a pounder. I realized that I had gone too far when one day I snapped a hammer shank in a brand new Baldwin Hamilton. C3. It cost me the client--which was an expensive way to learn. I prefer now to *coax* the string to where I want it using an impact lever. I believe *very unscientifically* that the impact causes a *tension* wave to travel down the string allowing it to render more easily. I do try to time the impact to the hammer blow. As for stability, coil tightening and tapping at the bridge take care of a great deal of it. Just as in regulating anything you do affects the rest.
