He leveled strings by blocking the hammer to the string and determining the
unlevel by plucking and listening.  Then he used the Don Manino leveling tool
one can get from Schaff.  On one occasion he used a brass rod to push down on
a string that was too high.  He massaged the string ...did not pull up to bend
the string.
