Hi Susan!   I was playing Mozart's D minor Fantasy with the first section
using the moderator on a 1790 Viennese style piano today!   It's a delight,
when used judiciously.   What it does is place a thin layer of fabric,
generally, linen between the hammers and the strings,  and gives a
delightfully gently veiled effect.
