Finish removal over polyester

I was recently offered a 1985 Yamaha G-3 grand which was painted white
over its original glossy black finish. The piano is far away, so I can't
experiment, but I assume the black is polyester and the white (sprayed
on) is laquer or enamel. Any ideas how the original finish could be
restored, or would it even be worthwhile to try?
