To prevent the scarring of the rim, find a gutter supply service that uses the
long, continuous roll of aluminum stock.  They will sell you scrap for cheap.
Cut as many pieces as you need to go around the inside of the rim, and glue
inexpensive felt to one side.  Place these around the rim before you begin
moving the plate.  You can even cut and fold the tops so that they hold
themselves in place.
