Quality upright damper felt blocks

I've been using APSCO's tapered damper block felt for years and I'm not
happy with the damping on many pianos. I get plenty of follow, the felt is
seated evenly and is centered, but still is not crisp. I'm beginning to
wonder if it's the felt. Often times the blocks are not "square". What
felt do you use?

P.S. I do not add a thin rod against the strings to help push the middle
of the felt against the block for gluing as Bill Spurlock suggests. Is
that my problem?
