On your last point, a factory I worked at years ago had sucess with cracked
frames where the crack was by the strut and the pinblock area, using an
angle grider, cutting in to the crack, an making a deep groove and then
welding. A point with the properties of cast iron that was explained to me
years before I came into the piano trade (and I should have paid more
attention to) is that if you take four straight pieces of cast iron and
weld then in a square      _   then three joints will work and the forth
weld will                                        |_|
pull one of the others apart, apparently it was given as an exam to
apprentice welders. I take it the person telling me this knew what he was
talking about, I have never verified it with anyone else.
