Humidity is very likely a cause of tonal variation in piano hammers. It
would be noticed only on a very good piano in very good condition by a
sensitive musician. A good way to modify its effects is to iron the hammers
with an ordinry clothes iron set on medium. This will remove some moisture
and brighten the tone somewhat without resorting to chemical hardeners.
