Old Keytop Adhesive

When I remove old plastic keytops, and sometimes ivories, I detect an odor
that smells like menthol. I assume I'm smelling the old adhesive. I can
smell it when I use heat to soften the adhesive, and when I cut off the key
fronts on the table saw. Does anyone know what it is I am smelling, and
whether it is toxic?
