When you pull the knot up tight, each half of the splice must conform to the
other half. They sort of meet in the middle and share the load. Any more
than 1/2 bigger size means the new wire won't snug into the original, and is
more likely to make the original wire break. Equal size wire means the new
wire is more likely to break. That 1/2 size makes it a fair fight, where
only the tech loses (blood).
