But, if the hammer line is too low, the shank could be hitting the repetition lever when it falls back into place. That might be more of a "snap" than a "clunk" though. Also, the jack might be making some kind of noise when it jumps back under the knuckle, as you mentioned, but that would tend to be more individual, and the hammer line would be more universal.
