  On the face area where the lever contacted the keyframe I scarfed out a 
thin joint, on the lever, and put in a flat grained piece of maple to spread 
the load and 'help' keep any layers from splitting.  And on the area where 
the pedal rod hit I did the same thing. Good luck if you go this route :-)
