You can get some precision thickness leather, make punchings and cauls
and glue them in.  This would be a much more permanent solution.

Also you can make some felt punchings of quality felt, make cauls and
this would be an excellent solution.  

After all, someone figured out how to do it in the first place, you
should be able to do the same.
