Thanks to all for the scholarly responses to my query about the Yamaha C3 pinblock 'fit'. Yamaha's 'tolerance', as Jim diplomatically states, reminds me of Samick's defence of non-mated pinblocks/flanges during my 7 year tenure with Samick Canada. Factory engineers (apparently including the great Klaus Fenner) didn't believe that this type of close fit was necessary. If they had any evidence or empirical data on which to base that belief, they certainly didn't share it with us, their humble distributor. Of course I understand that there are other potential causes for the tuning instability my colleague describes. I'm just surprised that some high-volume manufacturers couldn't devise a process to achieve this fit cost effectively and forever silence us critics (at least on this point).
