Voicing with Bartolomeo

In The Bartolomeo Chronicles in this month's Journal (i.e. May 1999),
among the voicing procedures mentioned are "card hammer sides" and "wipe
the strings with alcohol". What is "carding hammer sides", and what is
the reason for wiping strings with alcohol.
