Jay, et al;

As with any type of used thingees terms such as "Grade A" or "very good
condition" are relative and will not mean the same thing to everyone even if
both parties are honest people :-)
As you read the following list bear in mind that the few B grade pianos I
have acquired all wound up being rebuilt because I would not sell them as is
even after thorough cleaning, etc.

One of the suppliers I buy these thingees from uses the following system:
A+
A grade

"Showroom ready" These pianos are void of any flaws on the exterior or the
interior. The action is at factory specifications. Pianos in this condition
are usually polyester and are seldom over 10 years old.

B+
B grade
B-
Minor flaws in the case finish. Action, pinblock, pins, soundboard, and
strings are in excellent condition although, action may require minor
regulation. Case flaws can be easily removed by polishing and buffing. These
pianos are usually 10-20 years old.

C+

More extensive case flaws present, i.e; scratches and dents but no big
gouges or holes present. Case will require cleaning and, scratch and dent
repair. Interior is complete and in working order. Action will probably
require regulation. No Cracks in the soundboard. Pin block in good
conditionbut, minor corrosion or grunge may be present. These pianos are
usually 15-30 years old.

"The Piano Technicians Special" Pianos in this condition are favored by
technicians with repair facilities who want their initial investment kept to
a minimum. Case refinishing usually required. All interior parts are present
but may require repair/ replacement. Action regulation required. Pin block
usually sound , unless noted. Replacement seldom needed. Sound board usually
sound, unless noted. Replacement seldom needed. Shimmming may be required, if
noted. Good cleaning in and out is necessary. These pianos are usually 20-30
years old.
