About The Value of Chickering Quartergrands, etc:

I will never forget the 20's 6'4" Chickering with the bad pinblock owned by a
university 12 years ago. Piano had to be rebuilt, but was clearly going to
be a fine specimen. What was its value? Needed everything, so I figured it
to be $500-$1000. It sold for $1000 to a private party (a client) who turned
it over in the LA Times for $3500 in the same condition - and disclosed
condition to buyer, who just wanted a fine Chickering very badly and was
going to spend whatever $$ to get it rebuilt. Chickerings are interesting.
We techs see all of their wierdness and shy away, but there are some who
recognize and are willing to pay for the Chickering greatness.

<<These were the ones with the aweful sectional pin blocks.>>

Actually, Chickering used the sectional pin blocks in many styles other than
the quartergrand, all the way up to the 9'. Fortunately haven't had to
replace any yet....
