My guess is that the jack rest felt is compressed and knocking
on the spoon upon return, hard knuckles also.

I have a customer who has been constantly complaining about
this noise. The Perma-Click action has finally gotten to her and
I'll be starting with the hammers/shanks& flanges. Those knuckles
have been particularly firm.
