Tuning Pins

It appears there is more than one good solution.  On the first piano try this.
On the next piano try that.  You will eventually decide which method you prefer.

I didn't read all the responses thoroughly, but I think there is one thing that
hasn't been mentioned.  On some small vertical pianos the wire coming off the
tuning pin is already so sharply angled that it wants to jump over the coil.  No
way would I drive such a pin deeper; it's just asking for trouble.

And to answer your second question, if you want to do both, why not?  I can't
see that it will hurt anything.  But I wouldn't.
