Here are some "how nots"
I suppose you shouldn't play a grand while the soft pedal is being pressed
but I have never heard "no-nos" or seen consequences of this. Its just
that in the imagination the hammer is hitting the string as it is moving
sideways. Then there are the "half pedalers" who press the "soft" pedal
half way down because the tone is quiter from hitting in between the
grooves. I always wondered how they could get five grooves on the hammer
as if they did it exactly the same each time.
You shouldn't play with rings on. They can get caught on the overhang
and really hurt. Don't play with dirty hands, especially after eating
peanut butter and honey sandwiches, or changing the oil in your car.
The pedagogues say don't play with your hand or wrist resting on the key
slip, but I can almost swear I saw Rubenstein do it in a Public TV
broadcast just before his 90th birthday. And I do think it is better not
to "slap" the keys with your fingers, but actually if the heavy players
did this they might break less strings.
