HI Brian, I would simply duct tape a hammer shank at the height that you want the pin to be at. Then pound those suckers in till the shank reaches the plate at a uniform depth. I have seen fancy devices that have been milled to have a metal rod that dangles down and when it touches the plate it gives a little thru a sliding mechanism. The shank idea works well unless you go past level and drive the shank up the punch. Be careful, and the cheap way may work for you.
