Tape a hammer shank to your pin driver, trim it to the desired height and 
when pouding in the pins, as the bottom of the shank touch's the plate, stop

 Not for ratchets but for key capstans, I purchase a stock wrench from the 
supplier and modify it.  Trim the pointer on a grinder to where it is smaller 
in diameter and sharp to the touch. The supply houses also carry non holed 
capstan wrenches in 3 sizes, including Steinway which has a larger capstan.
