In a message dated 9/5/99 5:15:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time, you write: << These are from the SAT manuel numbers that were posted. Where the C--G is beating 2.67, that is contracted by four cents, or the 696 fifth which is 6 cents tempered from a pure fifth (702) which is more than 1/4 comma but less than 1/3 comma, ---ric >> This is not meant to be inflammatory, merely factual. The above description for the Werkmeister III is not correct, it is off by quite a bit. A 1/4 Syntonic Comma 5th should be measurable in a piano from 5.0 to 5.2 cents narrow of Just Intonation. In a Meantone temperament or Well-Tempered Tuning like this Werkmeister, they should all be able to be measured and all should be exactly the same. The theoretically pure 3rds that are the result of the 1/4 Comma tempering should have a scant width of 0.7 to 0.9 cents. If the FAC program Correction Figures do not produce this result at least reasonably well, then either the figures and/or the program are not valid. If you use a Direct Interval Programming approach to HT tuning, you can be absolutely sure that your program is correct. You have the added benefit of a complete understanding of the temperament because you constructed it piece by piece. Bill Bremmer RPT Madison, Wisconsin
