Hi Jim, Yes, this needs to be stated. It is assumed that one would only reformat the drive AFTER the files had been copied. I've been fiddling with computers so long that maybe I assumed too much. :-) Brian, reformat the drive BEFORE you buy a new one, and AFTER you try to save the data.
