Sounds more like it would be great for "burning" shanks in the field. I 
have used one of these torches, though, to remove the temper from a very 
small area of a pedal spring, so I could make a screw hole. (For a Chickering 
with the strange diagonal pedal dowels.) It worked fine. 

By the way, I got a post from Kris Anderson (thanks, Kris) who tried my 
tip for rendering old dry hammer shanks more mellow before using hot 
bending pliers, by the application of vodka (Kris called it "Kline's 
Universal Solvent - Not For Human Consumption" <big grin>). It worked!
