Sounds more like it would be great for "burning" shanks in the field. I have used one of these torches, though, to remove the temper from a very small area of a pedal spring, so I could make a screw hole. (For a Chickering with the strange diagonal pedal dowels.) It worked fine. By the way, I got a post from Kris Anderson (thanks, Kris) who tried my tip for rendering old dry hammer shanks more mellow before using hot bending pliers, by the application of vodka (Kris called it "Kline's Universal Solvent - Not For Human Consumption" <big grin>). It worked! <imagine fizzy delight> Has anyone else tried it yet? Susan Kline
