John, List,
Another tip in sharpening, especially for notching, is what's called a
"microbevel". In the woodworkers world, it's up there with "to PBR or not
to PBR" but no where near as volatile as.... let's say....." etd vs.
aural". Anyway, it's a bevel within the main bevel, at a "micro level" at
the tip. Needs lots of touch-up when doing dirty work, but with nice clean
consistent maple (like a bridge cap), it'll last quite a while. When done
right, through trail-and-error, it increases efficiency and ease quite a
bit. Try that finewoodworking site for articles, or find it in their
supplemental book of tips and techniques. (for chisels and carving tools
and sharpening) Well worth the investment.
