Hello Lance, I've never seen a Chickering in this neck of the woods but last year repaired, rebuilt a Pleyel from 1885 or so. The plate on this piano dismantled into about 10 pieces and had me scratching my head for a while, as there were several "screws without slots". After some time I worked out how to get the thing apart. If I recall this piano had large slotted nuts under the plank. (Though you have already checked this on the Chickering, (no pun intended)). This required a tool to be made to stradle the bolt and fit under the plank etc etc. I don't know if this is any help but keep looking at the thing and an answer will come to you.
