Many thanks to Dave Porritt, Robert Scott, and Robert Morss for their
responses.  By carefully observing the frequency spectrum display, as
all three advised, I was able to identify the problem.  Increasing the
microphone volume, as well as varying the strength of the hammer blow,
allowed me to finally get a consistent reading on the second partial of
F3.  Although the problem is solved, I do suspect a problem with my
laptop, as the second partial of F3 appeared to be much weaker on the
display than the second partials of A3 and A4 at the same mike level
(BTW, RS, this same symptom was observed on several lesser
pianos......including some with barely worn hammers).
