Detroit is in the process of celebrating its 300th birthday. Among the = festivities was a performance of an 800+ voice choir accompanied on a = couple of numbers by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The event was = staged on a huge temporary stage by the river. At least 95% of the = choir were energetic black gospel singers. During the rehearsal they = set that stage rocking and swaying to where people reported feelings of = motion sickness. Needless to say, they were asked to cool it with the swaying to the = music, which didn't seem to dampen the energy used in belting out their = songs. The volume was deafening at the backstage perch occupied by = myself and the stage hands -- we could feel it going right to our bones. = Mayor Dennis Archer was the only person brave enough to stand between = the risers. It's incredible he didn't get pulverized body and soul by = all the musical energy. Z!
