Learn more about the specifics of the study before you jump to any conclusions. I think you should dress neatly but comfortably--crawling around under pianos in a coat and tie is beyond the call in my opionion. There are also regional and cultural standards of dress. Techs in Honolulu I would bet dress differently than those in New York, and, in a more provincial culture you would expect more formal styles of dress.
