John Dewey is set up to replace dowels with the rails in place. He cooks the
old dowel dry with a resistance hearing cord (used to thaw frozen water pipes
in the "real" world). The desiccated and shrunken dowel is then driven out and
a pre-desiccated replacement is driven back in. As the replacement absorbs
humidity, it clamps itself in the tube. Then you drill the holes and
reassemble. You can do it yourself, or send the stack to John and let him worry
about it.
